Once again, Heights PTA wants to recognize and thank our Story Time Volunteers that come and regularly read to our children! There is no better way to share your love of reading and you will not find a more appreciative audience. Anyone with a cleared background check can read to our kids by signing up here.
Save the date for “Get to Know Heights PA” information meeting scheduled for March 20th at 6:30 p.m. in Heights Elementary. Everyone is encouraged to come, learn about Heights PTA and meet the group of people that serve our school.
We are actively looking for parents to be on the 2018-2019 PTA Board! Many roles and co-chair positions are open. Please contact Heather Koen at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested.
Important Texas primary elections are approaching on March 6 and it is critical that everyone engage in the voting process. Waiting until the general election in November to learn about legislative candidates and issues is often too late to make a difference. Primary elections in Texas almost always decide the elected legislators who will make the decisions that directly impact RISD on topics like school funding, accountability & the STAAR test, private school vouchers, and more.
Because a very small number of Texans typically vote in primary elections, it means a very small number of people are choosing who makes the decisions that impact every Texan.
http://www.risd.org/govote/ is a new website designed to provide the stakeholders with information about voting, elections, candidates and issues that impact the district and public education. Don't let another Texas primary election come and go without your voice being heard.
Heights PTA is very excited to bring Shakespeare on the Go Program to our students in 3rd - 6th grades on February 8. During this 50 minute language arts presentation put on by performers from Shakespeare Dallas, students will explore Shakespeare's innovative use of language. Lessons will be exemplified through a live, interactive performance of scenes from A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Frosty weather has kept school garden activity to a minimum, but as we move into February its time to start planning the spring garden. Garden Club has helped in the past week with the planting of onions and they also planted a small persimmon tree. We also harvested all the carrots, beets, broccoli, and lots of cilantro, which the kids got to take home.
Garden Tip of the Month:
Understanding Differences Program is coming to Heights Elementary next week for our 4th - 6th grade students. Heights is the only school the program is visiting this year and we are very excited about the opportunity. The program is conducted in two sessions in it is highly recommended that parents attend.
Session 1: Parent Program on January 31, 6:30 - 7:30pm in Heights Library - Parents are invited to participate in this hands-on disability awareness program to better understand students with learning differences. Participants will rotate through seven hands-on stations that explore physical, sensory processing, hearing, visual, fine motor skill, communication, and reading/writing challenges that affect so many students.
Session 2: Student Program on February 1 and February 2 from 8:00 - 12:00am - The same program is offered for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to develop understanding and respect for fellow students and others with physical, sensory or developmental disabilities.
We also still need a few volunteers to help during the student sessions. Health professionals will be there manning each station, but parent volunteers are needed to keep things running smoothly. To sign up and help, please Click Here>>
