In honor of Earth Day Week, all kindergarten and first grade classes had an opportunity to come out to the school garden on the mornings of April 19-21. A Dallas County Master Gardener gave lessons on how plants grow, soil, and the role of worms in soil building. The students got to see and touch red wiggler worms (from an indoor vermicomposting system) and they dug in the garden to find the more common earthworms known as "night crawlers". Yucky and slimy, but fun and educational for all!
On Friday April 21, with the help of PACE students and parent volunteers, the students put together a "Trash to Art" piece from the many bottle caps students collected over the previous two weeks. The kids were very enthusiastic and left their touch on the final piece. The final art piece (the first picture below) will be hung on a wall in the school garden to view for the remainder of the year.
